Gloucester Silver Classes
This silversmithing course is a continuous rolling over set of workshops for the beginner and improver alike to make sterling silver jewellery. It is held at the Milestones School, Longford Lane, Longlevens, Glos every Thursday evening from 6.30pm to 9pm; there is plenty of parking and disabled access. You pay for five weeks in advance and thereafter for the following five weeks should you wish to progress, which many do. During this supportive and very friendly set of classes you will learn the following:
Beginners and Improvers
How to size, cut, file, form and solder, sand and polish a ring and/or bangle.
Stamping, doming and granulation (making small balls)
reticulation
Fold forming
Gem setting
Design
and more
Of course, you will get lots of inspiration and guidance from your tutor, Wendy Murphy, but you can bring your own ideas and designs to the table and be shown the techniques and skills you need to bring your aspirations to reality. Wendy has a vast experience in teaching adults in this field and can offer suggestions and support and has the equipment and tools required to make lots of lovely pieces of silver jewellery. You can also use copper and brass (and later, gold) for accents in your jewellery.
What’s included?
The cost of 5 lessons is £110 and this includes hall hire, instruction, public liability insurance, all sundries (gas, pickle, saw blades, silver findings and scrap used, use of equipment, and …. HOME MADE CAKE or biscuits and refreshments. You have to pay for the silver used in your pieces either at cost price or Wendy can give you guidance on how and where to order yourself if you so prefer). What do you need to bring with you?
I advise learners to bring an apron, a notebook and pencil, a small plastic box to keep scrap in and most important of all, your enthusiasm, ideas and a smile on your face!
Can I see other students and what they’ve made?
Of course! And with their prior permission here are some images of past students making, having made and what they’ve made at my classes:
